In the Image of God

“God created man in His own image”(Genesis 1:27). We as humans are the only creatures that get to bear that honor. He made us in His likeness. He gave us the power to think, to choose, to love. He gave us relationships to reflect the relationship of the Trinity, to get to experience the joy that companionship and friendship offer. He gave us the ability to communicate our thoughts and feelings. And He put great worth on us. He lavishes His love on us and calls us His children. His very breath is what gives us life. We are His masterpieces.

“He created them male and female.” When the Bible talks about the image of women, it nearly always talks about inner beauty. Proverbs 31 mentions the ideal woman is hard working, clothed in strength and dignity, wise, compassionate, and faithful. In 1 Peter it says the beauty of a woman should not be merely external, but that of a gentle and quiet spirit, a soul that’s at rest in God. The Bible is clear, the beauty of a woman is primarily INTERNAL, that of the heart, mind, and spirit.

But the world has lied to us.

We women constantly hear and see that our beauty is primarily EXTERNAL. Victoria’s Secret posters scream “You need to look like this to get a man’s attention!” without even saying a word. Song lyrics tell us over and over again to “shake it”, like we’re merely here for men’s entertainment.

And when we (men & women, boys & girls) start to believe women were created to satisfy men, bad things happen. Abuse happens. Affairs happen. Divorce happens. Sex trafficking happens. When it is believed women were created to satisfy men, it degrades women’s worth to what they can offer, not who they are as individuals.

Ladies, I’m here to tell you you are worth more than that. You have a heavenly Father who stands at the door of your heart and knocks relentlessly. He is waiting for you to let Him in to satisfy your deepest longings and your need for attention and affection. He cares for you, not because your body looks a certain way or you wear certain skin revealing clothing, but because you are His child, His beloved daughter. He is good. He loves you.

You are lovely just the way you are. Tall or short. Blonde or brunette. Tan or pale. Introverted or extroverted. Entertainer or observer. Because your worth comes from so much more than what your body can offer a man.

Please do not believe the lies this culture feeds you that you have to dress a certain way or act a certain way to be worthy of attention and affection. You were created for so much more. You weren’t created to please man, but to please God. And there’s nothing you can do to make God love you any more or any less than He already does. You are desirable simply because you are His daughter. You are His beloved. You are cherished. You are loved.

Howdy! My name is Ashley and I’m thankful to be a born and raised Texas girl. I am a graduate of Texas A&M University (whoop!) and just recently became a mom to the sweetest little boy, Judah. I’m doing my best to walk daily with my Heavenly Father and make Him known to those around me. I am married to my college sweetheart, Steven, who I met country dancing while in school at Texas A&M. We currently reside in Houston, where we still enjoy dancing together and doing life with our awesome church community.
